The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many businesses operate. An article in the “Monthly Labor Review” of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 31% of traditional workers were laboring remotely by March of 2020. And many of those workers are resistant to going back to their place of employment to work.
Let’s face it, working from home typically offers flexibility, fewer distractions and less stress, not to mention it saves the cost of buying clothes suitable for work and auto expenses, which in turn diminishes the level of greenhouse gases. What’s not to love?
Employers gain as well, enjoying lower overhead and a reduction in the negative affects of office politics. But everything is a trade-off, and remote workers often miss the interaction with other people. Employers, in turn, have difficulty building loyalty and teamwork. A Zoom call just isn’t the same as being there. So how does the boss build camaraderie with team members who work remotely—with each other and with other onsite workers?
